Salthouse, Holt

One piece of human structure you won’t want to miss seeing whilst visiting the north coast of Norfolk is the sea walls at Salthouse. Sea walls are engineered to protect the dynamic nature of the coast from erosion by reflecting the power of the waves back to the sea. They mark humanity’s line of defence between land and sea, a tension between elemental forces and human endeavour. It is the perfect place to sit down with a drawing pad and relax.

At low tides along the Brancaster coast and ports you will be able to see, what appears to be, abandoned ships, shipwrecked on patches of sand. 1833 is where the tragic story of the shipwrecks of Brancaster began, so while you are taking a stroll and admiring the unique views, take in the story and share it with others.
