Walk in the steps of the now lost Norfolk weaving industry, the threads of which are sewn into nearly every village town and hamlet in this corner of Norfolk. From the ‘Strangers’ in Norwich to the villages of Worstead and their famous cloth, this trade was prominent everywhere. One town with a rich history is the small market town of North Walsham. During the Middle Ages in this North Norfolk town the industry particularly flourished, its market cross was once the centre of cloth trading.
Because of this long-standing affluence with weaving, it is of no surprise that Weavers’ Way, a 61-mile trail following from Cromer to Great Yarmouth is named after this once crucial industry. This trail will keep you stimulated from start to finish, with Weavers’ Way offering a rich and interesting contrast of scenery along the route. From diverse Norfolk woodlands and mixed farmland spanning across North Norfolk, to the long grazing marshes beside the slow flowing rivers Thurne, Bure and Yare as they meander through the land of mills and marsh.
You will travel through a countryside full of flint churches, large country houses, even historic windpumps, and relics of the golden age of train. Look out for the now abandoned infrastructure, such as station buildings, bridges and crossing cottages. Lose yourself in this rich and diverse landscape.
