Steal a little time and slow you down, it’s the Norfolk way. Free your spirit, leave landlocked worries behind and relax. As Ratty says in Wind in the Willows, ‘there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats’. Sail the tidal creeks and beaches around Wells-next-the-Sea, chatting with your skipper about exactly where you want to go. Don’t worry if you’re new to the sea, the Coastal Exploration Company will do everything for you, including rustling up fantastic Norfolk food, sustainably sourced from first class local producers. You’ll stop to eat in an unforgettable spot on the top of the tide and maybe leap in for some skin-tingling wild swimming. It’s a rush!
Leaving at the start of the tide gives plenty of time for meandering up and down narrow channels, learning sea-craft from times gone by, exploring centuries-old routes out to sea, still used by Norfolk fisherman today.
The air is alive with sound, the lap of waves, murmuring reeds, piping calls of oystercatcher, redshank and the wandering cry of wild winter geese. You might glimpse an elegant avocet or make eye contact with an inquisitive seal. The beautifully restored traditional boats are low impact, perfect for watching wildlife without disturbing natural behaviours. Depending on the season and time of day, you might return under a ruby red sunset or trailing ribbons of light back to the harbour. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
