And what of Shakespeare? One building in its time plays many parts and St George’s has been a courthouse, merchants’ exchange, French school, armoury and gunpowder store in the 1600s. And, after the guilds were dissolved, it hosted companies of players. The Queen’s Players appeared here seven times between 1585 and 1595 and academics believe Shakespeare may have performed with the Earl of Pembroke’s Men in 1593, when plague closed the London playhouses. Shakespeare’s leading comic actor, Robert Armin, was born in King’s Lynn, perhaps it’s where they met. But the earliest recorded theatrical production is a nativity for a January feast in 1445, featuring Richard Comber and William the barber from Grassmarket.
