You know the saying ‘the walls have ears’? Well they have voices too! The places we live have fascinating stories to tell, but it’s not always easy to uncover them. If you’d love to know where to begin exploring the history of your own house, or any other intriguing building, Stephen Poulter will show you how to become a House Detective!
Stephen is an author and historian who looked for clues to reveal the story of his own 17th century cottage in the rural Norfolk parish of Needham. Hosted at Needham Village Hall this two-day workshop, invites you to get involved, learn new skills and interpret a variety of original historical material. Using online and archive sources Stephen will provide examples of the maps, wills, deeds and other documents essential for investigating the background of any historic property. By the end you’ll be fully equipped to set out on your own personal journey of historical discovery.
The workshop includes a Heritage Tour of this ancient hamlet, which dates back to the Romans and includes a visit to the property highlighted in your study. You’ll get the change to examine a wealth of historic manuscripts relating to past residents of Needham’s surviving listed properties, as well as the 12th century round tower church where they’d have worshipped.
Perfect for fans David Olusoga’s A House Through Time or Stephen Fry’s Happened Here podcast which highlights places and the stories they tell.
Refreshments are included on the morning and afternoons of both days.
